The holiday celebrated on the second Monday of October. Though it is considered to be a national holiday it is not celebrated in all states. The exceptions are AK, AR, CA, DE, FL, HI, MI, MN, ND, NV, OR,SD, TX, VT, WA, WI, WY.
The holiday is devoted to the arrival of Columbus to America on October 12, 1492. The issue of not celebrating the holiday nationwide is due to the fact that some states refuse to celebrate a holiday which caused mortality of indigenous people.
The holiday coincides with the Latin American holiday also known as The Day of Race.
