The holiday is celebrated on the last Monday of May. The holiday is devoted to all those who have served for the military service and died during the service. Originally the holiday was serving to commemorate the men and women who have passed during the Civil War.

Before the World War I the holiday used to have a different name. It was called Decoration Day. Then after that the holiday received its current name.

The holiday is celebrated as a national holiday, thus various state institutions are not functioning. Usually the Memorial Day is being celebrated starting from the weekend.

    The holiday is devoted to the arrival of Columbus to America on October 12, 1492. The issue of not celebrating the holiday nationwide is due to the fact that some states refuse to celebrate a holiday which caused mortality of indigenous people.

    The holiday coincides with the Latin American holiday also known as The Day of Race.

    This is a traditional family holiday. The holiday table usually contains traditional American pies (pumpkin or apple) and turkey, stuffing, potatoes (or potato salad).

    During the holiday celebration the family members give thanks to those who have helped them. Most government offices, businesses, schools and other organizations are closed during the holiday. A large parade is being processed during the holiday in New York city.
